Four lights will be replaced by September 18th and will react to movement using sensors
The lighting at the Herrngartencafé in Darmstadt is being modernized. Four existing lights in the immediate vicinity of the café are being replaced with more powerful LED lights equipped with motion sensors. According to the city, the work should be completed by September 18, 2026
The Mobility and Civil Engineering Office has commissioned e-netz Südhessen AG to carry out the replacement. The existing masts will continue to be used, and their height will remain unchanged.
More light when there is movement
Under normal operating conditions, the new LED lights should have a similar light intensity to the existing lighting in the surrounding area. If the built-in sensors detect movement, the light intensity is automatically increased.
This is intended to provide more light, especially when the paths are actually in use, without permanently illuminating the surrounding area more brightly. The new lights are also positioned so that the light falls primarily on the necessary traffic areas. This should reduce upward light emission and light spill into the surrounding area.
City wants to improve sense of security
The city also hopes that this measure will improve the perception of the area around the Herrngarten café.
“With the new lighting, we are improving visibility and thus the feeling of safety around the Herrngarten café,” explains City Councillor Paul Georg Wandrey. At the same time, a technology is being used that directs the light to the required areas as needed.
