The Darmstadt Music Society and the Darmstadt Sinfonietta invite you to an evening concert with works by Mendelssohn, Rheinberger and Brahms
The Darmstadt Music Society and the Darmstadt Sinfonietta invite you to a concert evening entitled "Longing" on Sunday, June 21, 2026, at St. Paul's Church in Darmstadt. Starting at 6 p.m., the program will feature major works of Romantic choral music that explore themes such as inner turmoil, hope, solace, and human vulnerability.
Mendelssohn opens the concert evening
The concert opens with the cantata "As the deer pants for water," based on Psalm 42, Op. 42, by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. This work is considered one of the most important sacred compositions of the 19th century, combining powerful choral music with an emotional setting of the Old Testament psalm.
Rheinberger organ concert with Thomas Höpp
This will be followed by Josef Rheinberger's Organ Concerto No. 1. The work combines classical form with romantic sonority and thrives on the interplay between organ and orchestra. The solo part will be performed by Thomas Höpp, organist at St. Bonifatius in Wiesbaden and choirmaster of the Darmstadt Music Society.
Brahms' Alto Rhapsody concludes the performance
The concert concludes with Johannes Brahms' Alto Rhapsody, Op. 53, based on a text by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. This work for alto voice, male choir, and orchestra is considered a powerful musical exploration of loneliness, solace, and hope.
The soloists are Jana Baumeister (soprano) and Lena Sutor-Wernich (alto) from the Darmstadt State Theatre. The musical direction is by Nicolas Kierdorf, second Kapellmeister at the Darmstadt State Theatre.
Admission to the concert is free.
