After his contract was terminated in Mainz, the attacking player has signed again with Darmstadt
Marco Richter is returning to SV Darmstadt 98. The 28-year-old, who already played for the Lilies last season, has signed a new contract in Darmstadt. Since Richter terminated his contract with 1. FSV Mainz 05 on September 1st, SV 98 was able to sign the free agent attacking player even after the transfer window had closed.
Richter was on loan to Darmstadt last season and made 32 appearances for SV 98, contributing to twelve goals.
Contact was not broken off after the loan ended
According to sporting director Paul Fernie, a permanent signing of Richter was initially not realistic. However, the situation changed due to the termination of his contract in Mainz.
“Contact with Marco never broke off after the end of his loan,” Fernie explained. Talks intensified at the beginning of this week. Richter showed last season “that he can be an important player in our team.”.
Richter himself had also stated that he hadn't ruled out a return to Darmstadt. After the transfer window closed, various options had presented themselves. "After speaking with Paul and Flo, it quickly became clear to me that I see my future with the Lilies," said the 28-year-old.
More than 170 Bundesliga matches
The Friedberg native was trained in the youth academies of FC Bayern Munich and FC Augsburg, among others. At FC Augsburg, Richter made the leap to professional football, playing 102 competitive matches, 97 of them in the Bundesliga.
Later he played for Hertha BSC and 1. FSV Mainz 05, making a further 79 Bundesliga appearances for both clubs. In the 2024/25 season, Richter was on loan to Hamburger SV, where he played 28 competitive matches.
Now another chapter begins for him in Darmstadt. Marco Richter will wear the number 5 jersey at SV Darmstadt 98.
