Approximately 50 square meters on Pallaswiesenstrasse and Rößlerstrasse will be landscaped – volunteers can help on September 18th
At the intersection of Pallaswiesenstraße and Rößlerstraße in Darmstadt, an area of approximately 50 square meters will be de-sealed and subsequently planted with greenery. Residents and other volunteers are invited to participate in the planting event on Friday, September 18, 2026, starting at 11:00 AM
The city will de-seal the area beforehand. During the community event on Friday, perennials and shrubs will then be planted, and deadwood, field stones, and a sandarium will be created to provide habitats for insects.
Residents can help with the greening project
In addition to city employees, the BUND (Friends of the Earth Germany) and the city's nature guides are participating in the project. Residents of the Pallaswiesen/Morneweg neighborhood are especially invited to help with the design of the area. Work will begin at 11 a.m. and is expected to last into the afternoon.
The Office for Climate Protection and Climate Adaptation also provides information on site about climate adaptation, urban climate, urban greenery and natural gardening.
Michael Kolmer, the city's environmental and climate protection officer, sees the removal of impervious surfaces as part of the city's climate adaptation strategy. The goal is to reduce sealed surfaces, particularly in urban areas prone to high temperatures, and to enable the development of drought- and heat-adapted green spaces. According to the city, this will improve the local climate, rainwater absorption, and create additional habitats for plants and animals.
This action is part of the "paving over" competition
This measure is also related to the nationwide "paving over" competition, which records the number of unsealed surfaces. According to the city, Darmstadt currently ranks fourth among large cities with 61 paving stones removed per 1,000 inhabitants . The city is aiming for another top-three finish.
