The event on September 19th will take place at Mühlbach, Hegbachsee and other collection points
The city and district of Groß-Gerau invite everyone to a joint litter collection event on Saturday, September 19, 2026. From 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., as part of Climate Week, participants will collect litter from waterways and other locations within the district. The event is being held in cooperation with RhineCleanUp .
The meeting point is at 9 a.m. at the municipal depot of Groß-Gerau, Mühlstraße 6–8. Prior registration is appreciated, but spontaneous participation is also possible.
Mühlbach and Hegbachsee in focus
Collection areas include the Mühlbach stream and the Hegbachsee lake. Volunteers can also participate in other parts of the city, for example at the Scheidgraben stream in Dornheim, the Landgraben stream in Wallerstädten, or the Mühlgraben stream in Berkach. Collections can take place not only directly at the waterways, but also in their surroundings and at other locations.
Anyone wishing to collect litter in one of the city districts should inform the organizers in advance via email. The necessary equipment will be distributed to all participants at the municipal depot.
The city provides gloves, grabbers, and garbage bags. Volunteers also receive a small refreshment package. After receiving their equipment, participants travel independently to their designated collection points.
According to the city, Mayor Jörg Rüddenklau, District Administrator Thomas Will and First Deputy District Administrator Adil Oyan are also participating in the campaign.
Garbage from streams reaches the sea via the Rhine
With this initiative, the city and district aim to raise awareness of the consequences of carelessly discarded waste. Litter in smaller bodies of water can be carried further downstream via rivers. For example, the water of the Mühlbach flows via the Schwarzbach and the Rhine, eventually reaching the North Sea.
Litter collection campaigns have been held in Groß-Gerau for several years. This year's collaboration makes the event part of RhineCleanUp, which involves collecting waste along rivers and other bodies of water.
Participation is possible without registration
Registrations are possible online via RhineCleanUp or by email to umweltschutz@gross-gerau.de . The city can answer any questions at 06152 7166150.Those who decide to participate at the last minute can also join without prior registration.
