Around 100 people are participating in the RhineCleanUp in Riedstadt – an exhibition and repair café complement the sustainability week
Around 100 people collected a total of 690 kilograms of trash during the RhineCleanUp in Riedstadt . On Saturday, September 12th, participants cleaned up along the Old Rhine and the Rhine rivers. The event also marked the Riedstadt kickoff to the Groß-Gerau district's Climate and Sustainability Week.
The starting point was three meeting points: Richthofenplatz in Erfelden, the Schwedensäule parking lot, and the satellite measuring station near Leeheim. Participants included confirmation students from Riedstadt, members of the DLRG Leeheim and the RhineCleanUp group Riedstadt, as well as other volunteers.
Low water levels expose additional trash
One focus of the cleanup operation was the Old Rhine near Erfelden and Leeheim. The Rhine riverbank at Schusterwörth was also cleared of litter.
According to the city's sustainability manager, Sandra Gassauer, the low water level of the Rhine brought a particularly large amount of trash to light. Among the items found were a toy car, parts of a mannequin, and an irrigation pipe approximately five meters long.
Mayor Marcus Kretschmann welcomed the largest group of participants to Richthofenplatz at the start of the event and thanked the helpers as well as the RhineCleanUp group Riedstadt, led by Bettina Gruhle, for their efforts.
Exhibition in the town hall until October 1st
The collection campaign was part of the climate and sustainability week of the Groß-Gerau district, which this year focuses on the theme of "waste" .
is on display in the foyer of Riedstadt Town Hall until October 1st . Informational banners address waste prevention and proper disposal. Items collected during previous clean-up campaigns are also on display. The exhibition can be visited during town hall opening hours.
Repair café to conclude the action week
To conclude the Riedstadt events, the repair café will open on Saturday, September 19th, from 2 pm to 5 pm in the old town hall of Crumstadt, Poppenheimer Straße 1.
Visitors can bring portable, broken everyday items such as household appliances, electronics or toys and try to repair them together with volunteer helpers.
