The environmental working group is recording populations of barn swallows and house martins
The town of Riedstadt, associated with the author Büchner, is calling on its citizens to participate in the "Swallow Summer 2026" project and report any occupied swallow nests. This initiative is part of the town's biodiversity conservation program and aims to help assess the populations of barn swallows and house martins in the various districts.
Inventory every two years
Having returned from their winter quarters, swallows are currently in the middle of their breeding season. These birds are known for their strong site fidelity, often returning to their birthplace or even their original nest.
Nevertheless, barn swallows and house martins have become significantly less common in Riedstadt than they were a few decades ago. To document current population trends, the environmental working group requests support from the public every two years.
Locations where swallow nests have been occupied or newly built can be reported. Reports should include the street name, house number, and the number of occupied nests. A distinction can be made between natural and artificial nests.
The book prize will be raffled off
Reports can be submitted to the Environmental Department by phone at 06158 181-320 or by email to h.schanz@riedstadt.de . Those who also provide their name and address will automatically be entered into a book prize draw at the end of the Swallow Summer 2026.
Swallows are under special protection
This initiative is part of the program to promote biodiversity in Riedstadt. The state of Hesse has recognized a special responsibility for barn swallows and house martins and has included both species in a corresponding state catalog.
Swallows are not only considered skilled fliers, but also important helpers in the natural control of insect populations. Their nests are strictly protected and must neither be destroyed nor disturbed during the breeding season.
Anyone planning building renovations that could affect existing swallow nests should coordinate this with the Lower Nature Conservation Authority of the Groß-Gerau district beforehand. Violations of nature conservation regulations can be punished with fines. In many cases, however, solutions can be found that meet the needs of both homeowners and the protection of the birds.
