To mark the 73rd anniversary, Mayor Hanno Benz will lay a wreath at 11 a.m. at the memorial on the Platz der Deutschen Einheit (Square of German Unity) in front of Darmstadt's main train station.
With this commemorative event, the city remembers the people in the former GDR who rose up against the political and economic conditions of the SED regime in June 1953.
Remembering the struggle for freedom and democracy
The popular uprising of June 17, 1953, is considered one of the most significant events in post-war German history. It was sparked by economic problems, supply shortages, and growing discontent in East Germany as a result of the SED's "planned construction of socialism.".
In protest against the political and social conditions, numerous people took to the streets in East Berlin and other cities. The uprising was eventually violently suppressed with the help of Soviet military units.
Public memorial event
With the laying of a wreath, Mayor Hanno Benz, on behalf of the city of science Darmstadt, commemorates the victims and the commitment of many people to freedom, democracy and self-determination.
All citizens and media representatives are invited to the memorial event at the memorial on the Platz der Deutschen Einheit (Square of German Unity).
