Fewer traffic fatalities, but more hit-and-run incidents registered
The South Hesse Police Headquarters has presented the traffic accident statistics for 2025. According to these statistics, the number of traffic accidents registered by the police in South Hesse rose by 2.21 percent compared to the previous year, reaching a total of 25,076 cases.
The number of seriously injured people increased slightly by 13 to 502, but according to the police it remains at a historically low level.
The number of traffic fatalities is decreasing significantly
The decline in fatalities was particularly highlighted. A total of 31 people lost their lives in traffic accidents – a decrease of 13.89 percent.
Among the dead were:
- seven pedestrians
- five cyclists or e-bike riders
- twelve motorized two-wheelers
Among those killed in accidents involving motorized two-wheelers are nine motorcyclists, two moped riders, and, for the first time, an e-scooter rider.
Police continue to focus on prevention
Police Chief Christian Vögele emphasized that the low number of seriously injured persons and the decline in traffic fatalities were also the result of many years of road safety work.
These include, among others:
- the so-called "bike concept" for motorcyclists
- Biker safety tours on accident-prone routes
- the prevention project “Crash Course” at schools
- the "MAXimal Mobil" campaign for older road users
According to the police, the number of seriously injured motorcyclists was the lowest since the introduction of the "bike concept" in 2016.
Hit-and-run accidents continue to be a concern
The police headquarters is concerned about the rising number of hit-and-run accidents. According to them, almost one in four registered accidents in southern Hesse was a hit-and-run.
In a total of 317 cases, people left the scene of an accident without permission, even though people were injured.
The police point out that hit-and-run is not a trivial offense and appeal to witnesses to report any information and to remain at the scene of accidents.
