The Darmstadt Regional Council reminds the public of the provisions of the Youth Employment Protection Act
As the Darmstadt Regional Council announces, minors must undergo a mandatory youth employment protection examination before starting an apprenticeship, internship, or voluntary service. The authority is already drawing attention to the legal requirements so that young people can take precautions in good time before the start of the new training year.
The examination is mandatory under the Youth Employment Protection Act before young people start their first job. It also applies, among other things, to internships at vocational high schools or during a voluntary social year.
The investigation is intended to protect health and safety
The health check verifies whether young people are physically and mentally suitable for the planned activities and whether health risks can be avoided.
The examination can be performed by a doctor of your choice. The costs are generally covered by the state of Hesse – however, only if the doctor's office bills the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians of Hesse directly. The Regional Council therefore recommends clarifying with the doctor's office beforehand whether there will be any costs.
Certificate of eligibility for examination available at the registration office
For the examination, young people need an authorization certificate. This is issued upon presentation of their identity card at the relevant registration office. The certificate must be handed in at the doctor's office on the day of the examination.
After the examination is completed, the young people receive a certificate which must be presented to their employer.
Follow-up examination required after 14 months
The initial examination is valid for 14 months. Minors employed under the age of 18 must undergo a follow-up examination before this period expires. A new examination authorization certificate is required for this follow-up examination as well.
If the certificate is not submitted to the employer in time, the young person may not continue to be employed until the documents are submitted.
Exceptions are possible for short holiday jobs
An examination is not required for short school internships or for light work lasting a maximum of two months where no health risks are expected. Examples include delivering newspapers, running errands, or restocking shelves without heavy lifting.
Special protective regulations for young people
The Youth Employment Protection Act contains specific provisions for the protection of young people in education and employment. These include regulations on working hours, activities, protective measures, and instruction.
