Photo gallery: SV Darmstadt 98 loses 0-2 to 1. FC Nürnberg and once again reveals major weaknesses in their attacking play
SV Darmstadt 98 came away empty-handed from their away match against second-placed 1. FC Nürnberg. The Lilies suffered a 0-2 (0-0) defeat against the Franconians and are still waiting for their first away point of the season. While Florian Kohfeldt's team managed to keep a clean sheet for at least half the game thanks to a compact defensive performance, they lacked the ideas, creativity, and cutting edge going forward to seriously threaten the hosts. Only after conceding did Darmstadt briefly show more courage – ultimately not enough to take anything away from the game.
Darmstadt's tactical approach was clear from the outset. As in previous competitive matches, Kohfeldt opted for a compact formation designed to offer the opposition as little space as possible. While this gave Nuremberg significantly more possession, they initially struggled to break down Darmstadt's tightly packed defense. The game was characterized by numerous challenges, with few moments of brilliance on either side.
For Darmstadt, this strategy worked at least until halftime. The goalless draw kept alive their hopes of securing a point, even though the team from southern Hesse themselves offered little in attack. The price for their defensive stability was a largely harmless attacking game, lacking surprising moves and creative solutions.
After the break, however, the game quickly changed. In the 50th minute, Nuremberg finally managed to break down Darmstadt's defense with a well-executed combination. Piet Scobel capitalized on the opportunity and fired a shot past goalkeeper Alexander Brunst to give Nuremberg a 1-0 lead.
The deficit did at least have an effect on Darmstadt. They played with more courage, pushed forward more frequently, and substitute Lance Duijvestijn created several dangerous chances in the opposition's penalty area. For a brief period, it actually seemed possible to turn the game around or at least salvage a point.
Ibrahim El Kadiri had a golden opportunity. After a sharp cross from Noah Weißhaupt, he got a shot off from close range, but his effort was saved by Nuremberg goalkeeper Reichert. It was that moment that could have potentially changed the course of the game. An equalizer would have made the match wide open again in the final stages.
Instead, the hosts exploited the spaces created by Darmstadt's more attacking style of play. In the 88th minute, Nuremberg launched a counter-attack. Brunst initially made a strong save, but he was powerless against Boving's follow-up shot. The 2-0 scoreline effectively sealed the victory.
So, in the end, it was another disappointing away defeat.
Particularly sobering is their continued poor away form. While Darmstadt recently managed to pick up points at the Böllenfalltor stadium, they still fail to convert their performances into tangible results in away games. The brief period of attacking pressure in Nuremberg at least showed that more would have been possible. But such moments need to be exploited more frequently and, above all, more consistently if Darmstadt 98 are to climb out of the relegation zone.
