Free event provides information about climate adaptation in Darmstadt
How do heat and surface sealing affect the urban climate? What measures help to keep residential areas pleasant even in summer? An interactive climate tour through Bessungen on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, will provide answers to these questions.
The event is hosted by BUND (Friends of the Earth Germany), the Office for Climate Protection and Climate Adaptation of the City of Darmstadt, and the Darmstadt Adult Education Center. It begins at 5:30 p.m.
Participants measure temperatures themselves
During the tour, participants can measure air and surface temperatures themselves. A thermal camera is used to visualize differences between sealed and greened areas.
The presentation clearly illustrates the influence of greening on temperature development in cities and how heat stress can be reduced.
Tips for your own living environment
In addition to the measurements, participants receive practical advice on how to adapt private properties and gardens to the climate. The aim is to provide more cooling even during summer heat and simultaneously promote biodiversity.
In addition, experts will provide information about the climate adaptation plan and the heat action plan of the science city of Darmstadt.
Information on heavy rain and urban heat islands
Another focus of the tour is the impact of the urban heat island effect. Representatives from the relevant department will explain current measurements of the city's climate and present measures Darmstadt is taking to combat increasing heat waves.
Furthermore, strategies for protection against flooding during heavy rainfall events are presented.
Participation in the event is free of charge. The meeting point is the BUND Center for Urban Nature at Klappacher Straße 27 in Darmstadt (entrance via the Orangerie, first gate on the left).
