Literature, music and history in the courtyard of the hunting lodge
The municipality of Bickenbach continues its "Culture in the Castle" series on Sunday, May 10, 2026, with a special open-air event. In the courtyard of Bickenbach Hunting Lodge, the audience can expect a two-part program of readings, music, and historical insights.
Literary opening with musical accompaniment
The event begins at 11 a.m. with author Ernst Spangenberg. He will read from his new book, "Ermahnung einer Himbeere an ihr Junges" (Admonition of a Raspberry to its Young), which he describes as a retrospective of his literary work.
The reading will be accompanied by the band De Roode Pelikan, who will provide the musical accompaniment with chansons, klezmer and tango.
The work combines humorous and poetic elements with unusual thought experiments and invites the reader to view the everyday and the bizarre from new perspectives.
Historical teatime with insights into an extraordinary life
In the afternoon, at 3:30 p.m., a second reading will take place: The anglicist Claudia Stehle will focus on the English landowner and diarist Anne Lister.
The focus is on selected passages from Lister's diaries from the years 1816 to 1824, presented both in the original English and in German translation. Stehle also explains the secret code developed by Lister, which was used to encrypt personal information.
The reading combines biographical background with literary insights and paints a picture of an extraordinary personality of the 19th century.
Open-air event
The event will take place outdoors in the castle courtyard. In case of bad weather, it will be moved to the town hall at the same location. Admission is free; donations are welcome.
