Six riders caught on sidewalks – police remind drivers of rules for electric micro-vehicles
Police in Darmstadt's city center specifically targeted e-scooters and their riders during checks. On Monday, August 17, 2026, the security police conducted checks at various locations in the city center between 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
The checks were part of the South Hessian campaign "E-scooters? Only with a plan. Know the rules. Arrive safely." Six people were found riding their e-scooters illegally on sidewalks. They received warnings from the officers on the spot. The police also spoke with them about the applicable traffic regulations.
E-scooters do not belong on the sidewalk
The police point out that e-scooters may only be ridden on designated traffic areas and not on the sidewalk. Riding on sidewalks is a violation and can be punished with a fine.
According to the police, choosing the wrong road surface is one of the most frequent causes of accidents involving e-scooters. The South Hesse Police Headquarters is therefore launching a campaign to raise awareness of the rules and prevent accidents.
The Hessian police offer further information on their pages for the campaign “E-scooters? Only with a plan” and in their overview of the rules for e-scooters.
