Eleven children from the Kinderland daycare center are participating in the sustainability week of the Groß-Gerau district and collecting waste around their daycare center
Equipped with high-visibility vests and grabbers, eleven children from the Kinderland daycare center in Riedstadt-Goddelau collected trash. The activity took place as part of the Groß-Gerau district's sustainability week, during which the daycare center focused on the topic of waste.
The children were out and about on the grounds around the daycare center, the Christoph-Bär-Halle, and the elementary school. The adjacent playground and the sidewalk along Pestalozzistraße up to the fairground were also included in the litter collection.
From cigarette butts to liquor bottles
They found quite a few things: Among other things, the children found cigarette butts, beverage containers, paper tissues, a liquor bottle and a chip can.
According to deputy director Linda Müller-Huhnstock, the issue is also a concern for the daycare center outside of Sustainability Week. Since the facility borders publicly accessible land, the children regularly notice discarded litter there.
“The children are very observant and are very indignant about those who simply throw away their rubbish,” reports Müller-Huhnstock.
Collected waste becomes an exhibition
The following morning, the found items were transformed into a small trash exhibition. The children presented their collected objects to other children, parents, and the teaching staff.
“The children were proud and remembered exactly who had found what,” says Müller-Huhnstock.
The daycare center combined the collection campaign with practical engagement with waste in its own environment and the theme of the sustainability week of the Groß-Gerau district.
