Work on the landing stages is underway – low water levels are still preventing a concrete start date
The planned recommissioning of the Kühkopf ferry between Stockstadt am Rhein and Guntersblum has progressed further. According to those involved, the work is now in its final phase. However, it is still uncertain when the ferry service will actually begin. This is due to the current low water levels.
Representatives from the region met at Kühkopf to discuss the project's progress. Currently, the necessary bollards for the mobile mooring systems are being installed at the two landing ramps on the Hessian and Rhineland-Palatinate sides.
Low water levels affect the start date
A specific date for the first crossing cannot yet be given. "However, the work is visibly progressing. We are on the home stretch," explained Claudia Bläsius-Wirth from the Kühkopf Ferry Guntersblum Association.
The meeting was also attended by the chairwoman of the CDU parliamentary group in the Hessian state parliament, Ines Claus, Stockstadt's mayor Thomas Raschel and the chairwoman of the CDU Stockstadt am Rhein, Ute Schumann.
Raschel emphasized the cooperation between those involved on both sides of the Rhine. Looking ahead to future operations, he also mentioned the need to recruit volunteer ferry operators . He added that in the final phase, they would also have to consider how to raise awareness of the project among potential volunteers.
Connection between Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate
The Kühkopf ferry is intended to reconnect Stockstadt am Rhein in Hesse with Guntersblum in Rhineland-Palatinate. Those involved see it as a valuable service, especially for day-trippers, families, and visitors to the Kühkopf peninsula.
"It connects people, communities, and regions," said Ute Schumann. Ines Claus also sees the resumption of ferry services as an opportunity for local recreation and tourism on both sides of the Rhine.
A date for the resumption of service will be announced as soon as the conditions for ferry operations are met.
