A hike organized by the OWK Groß-Gerau leads to the reconstructed Limes fort of Pohl
Members of the Odenwald Club Groß-Gerau recently enjoyed a hike combining historical experiences with Roman specialties. The destination of the tour was the reconstructed Roman fort in Pohl, Rhineland-Palatinate.
A total of 42 hiking enthusiasts set off in two groups. Depending on their fitness level, they chose routes of eight or ten kilometers through woods and fields. The idyllic Hauserbach reservoir near Miehlen offered a particularly special nature experience.
Under brilliant summer skies, both groups finally reached the Pohl Roman fort. There, the participants were greeted with a Roman welcome drink made of vinegar, water, and lemon. This was followed by a traditional lunch served in clay bowls. Among the specialties was a herb sausage made according to a recipe that is approximately 2,000 years old.
After a good meal, a guided tour of the authentic replica of the fort was on the agenda. During the tour through sleeping quarters and the watchtower, the hikers gained fascinating insights into the lives of Roman soldiers on the Limes and learned interesting facts about daily life in a border fort.
The group then began their journey home, filled with many new impressions. The Odenwald Club Groß-Gerau thanked the hiking guides Beate Bolbach and Ingrid Kämmerer for the successful organization of the tour.
