A special musical prelude to Easter on April 5th
The St. Ludwig Church in Darmstadt's city center invites you to a special Passion concert on Saturday, April 5, 2025, at 6 p.m. Under the title "Mythical Laments," soprano Jana Baumeister and renowned organist Martin Lücker will present a program that musically explores the multifaceted nature of human lament.

At 5:30 p.m. Martin Lücker will give an introduction to the biographical and thematic background of the works. Admission is free; donations are welcome.
A concert full of emotional depth
The program unites works by Claudio Monteverdi, Johann Sebastian Bach, Paul Hindemith, Joseph Haydn, and Olivier Messiaen. The music takes listeners on a journey through the universal experience of lament – from the loss of a loved one to spiritual grief.
"Berenice, the Egyptian princess, laments the death of her lover, Ariadne mourns Theseus and touches Mary, who is grieving for Jesus' body."
The music spans a range between Baroque and modern styles, from passionate lament to meditative stillness. The versatility of the human voice showcased: from dramatic outcry to comforting gentleness.
Program:
- Johann Pachelbel – Ciacona F minor
- Paul Hindemith – Three Songs from “The Life of Mary” (after Rilke)
- Johann Sebastian Bach – Prelude and Fugue in F minor BWV 534
- Joseph Haydn – Scena di Berenice
- Olivier Messiaen – Les Mains de l'Abîme
- Claudio Monteverdi – Pianto della Madonna (after the Lamento d'Arianna)
Martin Lücker, the long-time organist of Frankfurt's St. Catherine's Church and professor of organ at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts, will interpret the works on the historic organ in St. Ludwig.
