Safe pedestrian crossings will be installed on Hindemithstrasse starting at the end of June
The city of Darmstadt is installing new, safe pedestrian crossings at the Hindemithstraße, Schönbergstraße, and In den Wingerten roundabouts in Wixhausen. Work will begin on Monday, June 29th. The aim is to significantly improve traffic safety for pedestrians.
Back in February, e-netz Südhessen, commissioned by the Mobility and Civil Engineering Office, had already begun installing new street lighting at the traffic junction.
Greater safety for children and the elderly
The measure stems from feedback from the public. Citizens had pointed out that the wide entrances and exits of the roundabout are difficult and sometimes unsafe to cross, especially for children, the elderly, and people with mobility impairments.
Mobility officer Paul Georg Wandrey explains: “With the new pedestrian crossings, we are creating more safety and better conditions for all people crossing the roundabout on foot – especially for children, elderly people and people with mobility impairments – in the interest of mobility peace.”
Lanes will be narrowed
To make crossings safer, the lanes at the entrances and exits of the roundabout will be narrowed. Additionally, zebra crossings will be marked at the crossing points.
The necessary marking work could only be awarded after a tender process and is now being implemented.
Guidance system for the blind planned
In addition to the new pedestrian crossings, the installation of a tactile paving system for the visually impaired is also planned. A complete barrier-free redesign of the area is to take place at a later date. According to the city, they are currently examining the possibility of combining this work with the partial removal of the paving from the median strips.
Short-term closures possible
The affected lanes will need to be completely closed for approximately ten minutes each for the marking work. Motorists should therefore expect short-term disruptions during this time.
