BUND and the environmental agency are offering a creative nature activity for children in grades 4 to 6
Children in grades four through six can combine nature and creativity at the Darmstadt Environmental Diploma event on Thursday, June 18, 2026. Under the title "Solar Pressure and Plant Hunting," the BUND Darmstadt and the Environmental Office invite children to the BUND Center for Urban Nature from 3:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Children who have already attended four events of the Environmental Diploma program can also participate in this offer.
Following in the footsteps of a naturalist
The event is based on the work of the British naturalist Anna Atkins, who made plants visible using light more than 170 years ago. While cyanotypes were used back then, this time the participants will be working with turmeric and sunlight.
First, the children go on a plant hunt and discover wild herbs growing in cracks in walls, joints in pavement, and other inconspicuous places. Then, the finds are arranged on specially prepared paper.
Works of art are created with sunlight
The sun's rays create individual plant portraits in vibrant shades of yellow and orange. Each flower and leaf leaves behind a unique pattern.
The resulting artworks can of course be taken home.
Registration via the environmental office
The event will take place at the BUND Center for Urban Nature, located at Klappacher Straße 27 in Darmstadt. Access is via the Orangerie, first gate on the left.
Applications are possible via the Environmental Diploma of the Science City of Darmstadt.
Those interested can obtain further information from the environmental office and the BUND Darmstadt.
