Volunteering for the environment and Linux as an alternative to Windows in focus
The BUND Darmstadt (Friends of the Earth Germany, Darmstadt branch) is offering two events on environmental and sustainability topics in early September. On Tuesday, September 8, 2026, the focus will be on ways to get involved in nature and environmental protection, even with limited time. The following day, Wednesday, September 9, will center on the more sustainable use of computers and the potential switch from Windows to Linux. Both events begin at 7 p.m.
Commitment to nature and the environment
Together with the adult education center, the BUND is organizing the workshop “Volunteering for nature and the environment – opportunities even with limited time” on Tuesday, September 8th, at 7 pm .
This presentation will showcase various ways to get involved, either privately or within an environmental organization. Opportunities that only require a few hours per week, month, or year will also be explicitly included.
Participation is free of charge. The workshop will take place at the BUND Center for Urban Nature, Klappacher Straße 27 in Darmstadt, and will also be streamed online.

Linux instead of a new computer
On Wednesday, September 9th, at 7 p.m., an information evening entitled "Your PC is not e-waste! – Linux instead of Windows". It is aimed particularly at computer users without technical background knowledge.
The central question is whether older computers can be used longer by switching to the open-source operating system Linux. Participants will learn about the available options for switching, how Linux differs in everyday use, and what should be considered before making the switch.
Anyone who wants to try Linux themselves or switch their computer over can participate in another event. A larger-scale switchover event from Windows to Linux is planned for October 31st, starting at 3 p.m., in the Rosa Parks Hall in the Lincoln Settlement.
This event is organized by the ewaste group of the Darmstadt Repair Café. It is supported by experienced Linux users from the Chaos Computer Club (CCC) and the Darmstadt Linux User Group (DaLUG).
Registration for the follow-up event is possible via email to evaste@joohome.de or at the information evening on September 9th.
