Environmental officer Kolmer appeals to citizens to avoid fires through prudent behavior
In light of the ongoing heat and drought, the city of Darmstadt, known for its scientific institutions, is warning of an increasing risk of forest fires. According to the German Weather Service, the region currently has a medium to high risk of forest fires. This risk could even rise to the highest warning level in southern Hesse in the coming days.
The city is therefore appealing to all citizens to be especially vigilant. Even a single spark or a carelessly discarded cigarette could trigger a large-scale forest or vegetation fire in the current dry conditions.
Lighting fires is prohibited outside of designated barbecue areas. This also applies near bodies of water such as the Prinz von Hessen pit. Anyone using a barbecue area should ensure that the fire is completely extinguished before leaving. Should the situation worsen, the city reserves the right to close all barbecue areas entirely.
Furthermore, the city of Darmstadt points out that vehicles should only be parked in designated parking areas. Hot catalytic converters can ignite dry grass and thus cause fires. It is equally important to keep access roads to forests clear so that fire and rescue services can reach the scene quickly in an emergency.
“Caution and vigilance are now crucial to prevent fires. Our common goal must be to prevent such situations from arising in the first place – and to ensure that swift and effective action is taken in case of emergency,” explains Environmental Officer Michael Kolmer.
Anyone who notices a fire or suspects one should immediately notify the fire department by calling emergency number 112.
