Anniversary celebration on May 16th with a program for the whole family
The Goddelau outdoor swimming pool looks back on a long history: The pool was opened 70 years ago – in a place that had previously served as a natural bathing and meeting place for generations.
From "weed" to the outdoor swimming pool
Originally, there was an artificial pond, the so-called "Weed," at this location. It served not only as a watering place for animals but also as a popular swimming spot for young people.
In 1956, the pond was replaced by a modern outdoor swimming pool. Mayor Christoph Bär gave a speech at the inauguration, before his son officially opened the pool with a jump into the water.

Gradual modernization over decades
In the following decades, the outdoor swimming pool was continuously further developed:
- 1965: Installation of a circulation pump and expansion to include a non-swimmer's pool
- 1980s: comprehensive modernization of technology and buildings
- Late 1990s: new pool lining
- 2013: Switch to chlorine-free water treatment
A particular innovation is the use of an alternative disinfectant, which is considered particularly gentle.
Sustainable technology and renovation
The facility has undergone extensive renovations since 2020. These include modern technology, a photovoltaic and solar thermal system, and the redesign of the non-swimmer pool.
The project was supported by, among others, the sponsoring association and a crowdfunding campaign.
Anniversary celebration for the season opening
The 70th anniversary will be celebrated on Saturday, May 16, 2026. The swimming season also begins at the same time. The program runs from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. with free admission.
Planned events include a church service, sports activities such as introductory scuba diving and beach tennis, and an exhibition on the history of the baths. Additional activities for children include a bouncy castle and face painting.
